It may seem obvious that in the capital of the Tyrol region of Austria, winter sports dominate the leisure experiences to be had, but there is plenty to occupy visitors to Innsbruck whatever the season. It is a vibrant, youthful city where contemporary culture in shopping, dining and nightlife sits well with the historic sights, museums, galleries and events to present a popular city break destination. Easy to get to from both Germany and northern Italy the city is well connected to most European cities and the hotels Innsbruck has are well established to welcome visitors throughout the year.
In an alpine location, skiing was always going to be the main activity in and around Innsbruck, but this is no exclusive enclave for the very rich on their winter adventures. While winter on the Nordpark is for skiing, in summer it has a mountain-biking route which is considered the most challenging free ride in Europe. The city is a great place for walking around, doing a spot of shopping, enjoying the rich cafe culture or taking in any number of museums and cultural events. The best options for visitors who wish to cram as much as possible into their stay is to buy a 24 hour Innsbruck Card, which permits free entry into all the sights and attractions as well as permitting one return ride up the Nordpark.
The Innsbruck Card also permits free travel on the efficient public transport system and since the card is only activated on first use, multiple cards can be purchased at the same time and used as and when required. A list of things to see will certainly include some of the historic buildings in the city. There are numerous great churches and cathedrals, palaces and castles which tell of a very long and illustrious history, and an even greater selection of museums, detailing everything from human anatomy to bells, folk art, and alpine history. From most of the city hotels Innsbruck life and culture are never far away.
The city parks are popular in the summer too and provide some respite from the more active city elements. The Alpine Garden is open throughout the summer and the Botanic Gardens are open throughout the year. There is also a city zoo, by virtue of its location, the highest in Europe and as a result is stocked with various alpine animal species, including the world's largest collection of alpine fish. Further out from the city there are two lakes, Natterer See and Lanser See, both of which offer an abundance of water sport and lakeside activities.
The hotels Innsbruck has come in various shapes and sizes but will typically have that classic alpine appeal which makes the city so popular. There are grand hotels with every leisure feature, budget backpacker hostels, and many mid-range hotels in-between, including some terrific traditional alpine inns. Most will have a good selection of visitor information and services and all will provide a base for exploring the historic capital of the Tyrol and all the natural majesty beyond.
